Forces in the World Around Us
In this Science Matters module pupils will learn about and investigate the forces that they encounter in the world around them.
In this topic we will answer questions like:-
What is a force?
What is the unit of a force?
What can a force do?
Can a force be measured and if so how?
We will then find out about different forces that are active around us such as:-
Friction
In this section pupils investigate how friction varies with the type of surface and they also consider the role of friction in everyday life.
With the SM Friction Block pupils measure the friction on different surfaces

Air Pressure
Demonstrating the surprising presence of Air Pressure
With a tug on the Air Pressure Mat you will be amazed at what air pressure can do!

Gravity
In their investigation of gravity our pupils will be measuring weight and also making and launching bottle rockets.
Upthrust
When investigating floating and sinking they will discover the role of Upthrust.

With completing the topic pupils will be much more aware of the essential role of everyday forces. They will also realise that our interaction with the world around us requires that we become skilled in managing forces.
